Passengers using the Transport network in the UK this weekend should be aware in advance of the possible effects of Storm Amy on train speeds as well as the cancellations and service disruptions on a few lines. Due to the strong winds and rain, Network Rail and train companies have recommended not travelling in certain areas.
Impact of the weather and operator responses
Due to the storm, Network Rail has put its contingency plans into action and is limiting train speeds in some vulnerable areas and expecting to have crews ready for repairs. In the North West, Avanti West Coast has started operating on modified schedules for the section north of Preston. A yellow weather warning for Lancashire and Cumbria and a strong wind warning for Scotland, Wales, and northern England. Passengers are advised to move and secure loose items such as garden furniture and trampolines, as they pose a risk of becoming projectiles in high winds.
Train services and customer refunds
ScotRail services to and from Scotland have been severely impacted by cancellations and delays due to fallen trees and flooding. There has been disruption and service delays to the Network Rail services in England and Wales and flooding and overhead cable damage as well. There have been disruptions to the service between Wigan North Western and Preston and New Cross Gate and London Bridge as well.
Travelers and particularly passengers traveling after 12 noon on Saturday are advised to reconsider traveling. Tickets are fully refundable and there are no fees for postponements for impacted services. There are no fees for postponements on impacted services which gives ticket holders the flexibility to travel on another day. Network Rail has put services to the North West to “prepare the railway for the impacts from Storm Amy”.
Travelers are advised to keep up to date with services as service changes and delays are likely. Rail operators and service providers will be undertaking measures to keep services operating and to comply with the travel requests set by Storm Amy.
